Einstellungen → Vorlage: Eine Gutachten-Vorlage importieren
Einstellungen → Verschiedenes: Ein Dateinamens-Suffix für das Gutachten anpassen
Viel Spass!
Gutachtor (english)
Gutachtor is software designed for writing scientific reviews. It combines reading, commenting, and writing in a single interface and supports a systematic and efficient review process. It runs as native software on Mac OS.
Artificial intelligence can be used—when appropriate. It is possible to use AI that runs on your own computer to ensure environmental sustainability and data privacy.
The software was developed based on my own experience reviewing seminar papers and theses.
I’d love to hear from you via email at gutachtor@bubenhofer.com if you download and use the software! And, of course, I’d appreciate any feedback on the software.
Installation Instructions
After downloading, unzip the file (double-click).
Place the program in any location and double-click to launch it.
The operating system’s security settings may block the program from launching because the download does not come from an officially trusted source. In that case, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and allow the app to run.
Enable AI Features
To use AI features, you must specify an AI provider in the settings. There are several options:
Recommended: Download LM Studio or similar software for managing open language models. Follow the LM Studio instructions to load a model and make it available as a local server on your own computer in the “Developer” section: Click “start server” there. Normally, it’s then sufficient to go to the “AI” section in Gutachtor’s settings, select “Use LM Studio” under “Local Model,” and the address will be entered automatically. You can use the “Test Local Model” button to verify that everything is working properly.
Otherwise, look up the correct address in LM Studio and enter it manually: LM Studio specifies the local address where the server is running (“reachable at”). Copy this address, append /v1/chat/completions to it, and enter it in the Gutachtor settings.
Alternatively, or in addition, you can use a commercial AI service. This usually requires setting up a developer account or similar and generating an API key. This key can then also be entered and tested in the Gutachtor settings under “AI” → AI Service with Key.
However, it is not necessary to use the AI features to make effective use of Gutachtor!
Important Principles
The package containing the annotated paper and the report always consists of two files: the PDF of the paper with the annotations and the report as a Markdown text file (with the .md extension). You can open either the PDF or the Markdown file by clicking “Open.” If the other file is located in the same directory, it will open automatically as well.
The report is written in Markdown format: This is a very simple and straightforward format that is, for example, described here.
PDF comments made in Gutachtor are also visible in other PDF viewers. In Apple’s “Preview,” you must select View → Highlights and Notes from the menu. In Adobe “Acrobat,” they are visible directly in the text when you hover over them with the mouse.
Useful Settings
When setting up Gutachtor, it’s a good idea to take a look at the following settings:
Settings → Categories: Set up categories for the comments
Settings → Template: Import an assessment template
Settings → Miscellaneous: Customize a filename suffix for the review
Have fun! And as I said: I’d love to hear your feedback on Gutachtor at gutachtor@bubenhofer.com!
